Choosing the Right Separator for Your Land Cruiser
Note: This guide is for US and Canadian Land Cruisers (FJ40, BJ40, BJ42, FJ45, FJ55). I'll do another guide for other markets in the future. For FJ55 owners, we have not developed an evap separator replacement for FJ55s yet. Toyota evolved the design of the fuel evaporative system several times during the lifecycle of the 40/50-series Land Cruiser. If you are looking for a replacement, read on to find out which one will work best for your rig.
If your Cruiser was manufactured prior to September 1972, your Cruiser uses a fuel expansion tank rather than the evap separator fitted to later Cruisers. If you are interested in converting your older Cruiser to a charcoal canister setup and want a custom part, reach out to andy@compyfab.com.

A note on swapped systems. Our rigs have been on the road for decades and many have been modified with swapped or improvised parts. If the separator on your Cruiser doesn't match what this guide says for its build date, you have a few options: Replace what's there (matching existing hose sizes and mounting points), or go with a stock solution (which may require additional parts). Early Generation: September 1972 to January 1975

All of these evap separators are characterized by a vapor outlet port the same size as the tank inlet ports (8mm), as it connected to the earlier, larger-size check valve (90917-10012, discontinued by Toyota). Note: All our fuel separators use the smaller vapor outlet port (to be used with 6mm fuel hose and check valve 90917-10020, still available from Toyota). - FJ40 Sep 1972 - Feb 1973 (Two-bolt version): Use Model 1000 if you have the skinny version. This has a mounting fin on a single side. Toyota P/N 77193-60010.
- FJ40 Feb 1973 - Jan 1975 (Three-bolt version): Use Model 1112 if you have the wider version with mounting fins on both sides. Toyota P/N 77193-60011.
- FJ55 Sep 1972 - Jan 1975: Toyota P/N 77193-60020.
Middle Generation: January 1975 to January 1979

Same form-factor as the prior version, but with the smaller diameter vapor outlet port to fit the newer check valve. This change coincided with the introduction of the 2F engine to the Land Cruiser lineup:
- FJ40, BJ40, FJ45: Use Model 1112. Toyota P/N 77193-60012.
- FJ55: Toyota P/N 77193-60021. FJ55 production continued until July 1980, but continued to use the same P/N.
Late Generation: January 1979 to October 1984
A 77193-60013 evap separator. A downward-facing vapor outlet, and all ports are sized for 6mm fuel hose.
In this generation, the fuel tank for all Cruisers sits below the cab, rather than inside it. This meant a new form-factor for the evap separator. US versions moved away from the check-valve, while Canadian versions retained them (likely due to a difference in emissions equipment / integral check valves in the charcoal canister between the markets). In this generation, Toyota standardized on 6mm fuel hose for all of the evap system (vent lines from the fuel tank to the evap separator, and from the separator to the charcoal canister):
- FJ40, BJ40, BJ42, FJ45: Use Model 1300. Toyota P/N 77193-60013. If you have a Canadian-manufactured Cruiser, we recommend you also buy a new check valve (P/N 90917-10020).
